Therapeutic Approach
I’m a Canberra-based therapist and counsellor offering child and family services through play therapy, individual counselling, and specialist positive behaviour support. My work focuses on trauma recovery, neurodivergent-affirming practice, and parent and carer coaching — all grounded in a deep understanding of attachment and emotional development. I recognise that every person and family has unique needs and strengths, and I work flexibly with children, young people, families, or carers, depending on what’s most supportive at the time.
In particular, my previous role as a Clinical Leader in an organisation supporting children and young people in out-of-home care (and their carers — kinship, foster, and residential) deeply shaped my practice. It strengthened my trauma-informed lens and my commitment to working relationally, compassionately, and systemically.
My approach is integrative and tailored. I draw on a range of therapeutic modalities — often beginning with psychodynamic tools such as attachment theory and emotion-focused work to explore relational patterns and emotional landscapes. From there, I integrate cognitive-behavioural approaches (CBT, ACT, DBT) to support value-based, practical change. My play therapy and behaviour support work are guided by developmental theory and an understanding of the nervous system.
I’m particularly passionate about supporting disabled, marginalised, and neurodivergent individuals and families — creating respectful, inclusive spaces where everyone feels seen, heard, and supported.
Hey there! My name is Kelly Chen. I'm a proud mom of two amazing, super energetic and "crazy" neurodivergent boys. And guess what? Neurodiversity is a big part of my family and friend circle too! My journey, navigating my own trauma while raising my kiddos (yeah, it's tough!), led me down the path of becoming a counsellor and behaviour support specialist. For me, it's all about acceptance, resilience, and staying true to myself. When I'm not working, you'll probably find me out in nature, tearing it up on the dance floor or hitting the gym.
I am a trauma-informed and neurodivergent-affirming Counsellor and NDIS registered Advanced/Specialist Behaviour Support Practitioner based in Canberra. I support neurodivergent children, young people, and their families through a compassionate, holistic, and relationship-focused approach.
As a parent with lived experience of trauma and raising neurodivergent children, I bring not only professional expertise but deep empathy and real-world understanding to my work. I know how complex, emotional, and isolating the journey can feel—because I’ve walked it too.
I create safe, inclusive spaces where neurodivergent minds are honoured, family voices are heard, and practical strategies are built around each person’s unique strengths.
My approach is holistic, person-centred and individualised. I offer services in English and Mandarin, and work with families from diverse cultural and neurodiverse backgrounds. With two addtional Master’s degrees in Business, I bring a strong foundation in systems thinking, communication, and client-focused care. That means my client's experience isn’t just respected—it’s central to everything I do.
My name is Kelly Chen
Let's connect and make this journey together totally "wholesome"!
