When Life Overwhelms, Why Do Our Kids Fall Apart?
Most of us have thought it: Can’t they see how much is going on? Why can’t they just behave so we can deal with this chaos?
The cruel reality is that when life veers off course, we become overwhelmed—and overwhelmed carers almost always leads to dysregulated children. The reason is simple: when we enter "survival mode," our children sense our cortisol and our chaos. They mirror it.
It becomes a vicious cycle. When we have limited capacity to regulate ourselves, our little ones can no longer "borrow our brains" to regulate theirs. The entire household feels like it’s short-circuiting. We wonder why they aren’t being more "understanding," but the irony is that their very understanding of our stress is what makes them fall apart.
The Anatomy of a Perfect Storm
Reflecting on my own last two weeks, the "flood" hasn't just been literal:
Heartbreak: My beloved five-year-old cat was diagnosed with a terminal tumor.
The House: A flood in the bedroom spread to the hallway and garage. Our home is now a construction zone of noise and heat, with more than ten industrial dehydrators and air purifiers making the air feel suffocated. And we don't know how long the whole process will take before the full repaire will be completed, it's in the hand of our insurance company.
The Family: My in-law's Parkinson’s has advanced; there was also a recent fall which lead ot inceasing support from the whole family.
The Body: My own blood tests showed abnormal markers of chronic inflammation—I know where they come from: it is the physical manifestation of trauma, ongoing stress, and genetics.

Between the vet visits, communication with insurance company, pulling furniture apart and moving them around, and GP appointments, my partner and I were running on empty. Simultaneously, our children seemed to "lose" their basic skills. Suddenly, they couldn’t make a simple snack, get a bandage, or willing to take a shower or brush their teeth. Further, we are constantly managing "unexplained" anger and constant sibling fights.
The Professional vs. The Human Parent
This morning, I started to reflect. Despite my professional background, I had become so preoccupied with managing the crisis that I forgot how children respond to their caregivers' stress. Yes, you heard me right: even as a professional, I have moments where I am unempathetic, short-tempered, and disconnected.
What Can We Do?
If you relate to these experiences and found yourself in the "flooded" state, the answer isn't to try harder—it's to accept our humanity. We need to accept that there are times when we simply cannot be the "perfect" anchor for our children.
Here is what might be helpful:
Self-Compassion: Forgive yourself for having a human nervous system. Give yourself time and space to recover and regulate.
Acknowledge & Label: Name the elephant in the room.
Repair the Rupture: When the dust settles, reconnect with our partners and children.
This is what I did this morning: on the way to school today, I said to my boys:
"How are you guys feeling today? I’m sorry that Mummy and Daddy have been so overwhelmed lately. You’ve probably noticed we’re busy and irritable. I know that’s been hard on you, and I’ve noticed you’ve been having a tough time, too. I hope we’ll all start to feel better as things get sorted out. We just need to support each other right now."
By naming the chaos, we stop the "flood" from drowning to the repairment and connection. We might still be in the mess, but at least we're in it together, we are CONNECTED.
